What Is Module Programming?

Modern vehicles rely on dozens of electronic control modules — computers that manage everything from engine performance and transmission shifting to body electronics, anti-lock brakes, and infotainment systems. When one of these modules fails or needs to be replaced, it must be programmed to the vehicle — configured with the correct software, calibrations, and security credentials so it communicates properly with the rest of the vehicle's systems.

This process typically requires dealer-level diagnostic tools, manufacturer software subscriptions, and specialized knowledge. That's where we come in. ST Mobile provides on-site module programming for auto repair shops across the Twin Cities metro area, so you don't need a dealer appointment and your customer's vehicle doesn't leave your lot.

New Module Programming

Installing a new OEM module from the dealer or aftermarket? We handle the complete setup — software flashing, VIN programming, security authorization, and calibration verification. We arrive at your shop with the manufacturer subscriptions and tools to get it done right, matching dealership procedures without the dealership wait time.

Used Module Programming

This is what we're known for. We program salvage-yard and recycled modules to your customer's vehicle — saving hundreds to thousands compared to buying new. The process involves VIN writing, security credential transfer, immobilizer relearns, and full system verification. Most shops and even many dealers don't have the tooling or expertise for this. We do it every day.

Important: The replacement module must be the correct application for the vehicle (correct part number and compatibility). We can only guarantee a successful programming outcome when the right part is supplied. Not sure if your module is correct? Include the part number in your service request and we'll verify before scheduling.

Module Cloning

When a module has failed but its data is still readable, cloning transfers everything — VIN, learned parameters, calibration data, and security codes — to a replacement module. This is especially valuable when a direct replacement isn't available, when the module stores critical learned data that would be lost in a standard reprogram, or when working with certain European vehicles where cloning is the most reliable path.

Remote Programming

For select modules and vehicle applications, we can connect to your shop's scan tool or J2534 pass-through device over the internet and perform the programming remotely — no on-site visit required. Remote programming is available for qualifying jobs. Contact us with your vehicle and module details to find out if your job qualifies.

Mail-In Module Services

Nationwide

Not in the Twin Cities? We still have you covered. Ship us your module and we'll clone or program it and ship it back. Mail-in service is available for module cloning, reflashing, and select programming jobs where the module can be serviced off-vehicle. This is ideal for shops outside our mobile service area, or for modules that are easier to remove and ship than to program in the vehicle. Contact us with your module details and we'll let you know if mail-in is an option for your job.

Can a used module be programmed to work in my customer's vehicle?
Yes — in most cases a used module can be programmed to a different vehicle. This is one of our core specialties. We handle the full process: VIN writing, security authorization, and software calibration. This saves shops and their customers hundreds or thousands of dollars compared to buying new from the dealer.
What is module cloning and when is it needed?
Module cloning transfers all data — VIN, calibrations, learned parameters, and security codes — from a failed module to a replacement. It's typically used when the original module has a hardware failure but its data is still readable, or when a direct replacement isn't available through normal channels. Cloning can save significant time and cost.
Do you need the original (failed) module?
For used module programming, having the original module available is strongly preferred and sometimes required — especially for security-related modules. It allows us to extract data needed for the replacement programming. Let us know your situation when you submit a service request and we'll advise.
What types of modules do you program?
We program virtually all control modules — PCM/ECM (powertrain), TCM (transmission), BCM (body), ABS modules, instrument clusters, TPMS modules, infotainment/radio units, and more. If it has software, we can almost certainly handle it.
Do I need to bring the vehicle to your shop?
No — we come to you. Our mobile service covers the entire Twin Cities metro area. We arrive at your shop with all the equipment needed to complete the programming on-site. For select applications, we also offer remote programming where we connect to your scan tool remotely.
How long does module programming take?
Most module programming jobs take 1–3 hours depending on the vehicle, module type, and complexity. Some jobs — particularly used module security relearns — may take longer. We'll give you a time estimate when you submit your request.
What vehicles do you cover?
