What Is ADAS Calibration?

Today's vehicles are equipped with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems — cameras, radar modules, and sensors that power safety features like automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and parking assist. These systems rely on precise alignment to function correctly.

When a component is moved, replaced, or disturbed, the system must be recalibrated to ensure it's reading the road accurately. A windshield replacement, bumper repair, sensor swap, suspension work, or wheel alignment can all trigger the need for recalibration. Without it, these safety systems may aim incorrectly — or not function at all.

Types of Calibration

The procedure depends on the vehicle, the system, and what triggered the need for calibration

Static Calibration

Performed indoors using manufacturer-specified targets and fixtures positioned at precise distances and angles around the vehicle. The system's cameras and sensors are calibrated against these known reference points. Static calibration requires a flat, level indoor space with adequate room for target placement — typically 15–25 feet in front of the vehicle.

Indoor only. Static calibrations cannot be performed outdoors. Lighting, wind, and surface conditions affect accuracy. If your shop doesn't have the required space, we can perform the calibration at our facility.

Dynamic Calibration

Some systems require the vehicle to be driven on public roads — typically at highway speeds for a set distance — so the cameras and sensors can self-calibrate using real-world references like lane markings, road edges, and signs. We handle the test drive as part of the calibration process.

Many vehicles require both static and dynamic calibration to fully complete the process. We'll confirm exactly what's needed for your specific vehicle and system.

When Is Calibration Needed?

Windshield Replacement

The forward-facing camera is mounted to the windshield — any replacement requires recalibration.

Collision Repair

Any impact that shifts sensors, cameras, brackets, or mounting points. Pre-calibration alignment checks may be required.

Sensor or Camera Replacement

New radar modules, cameras, or ultrasonic sensors must be calibrated to the vehicle after installation.

Suspension or Alignment Work

Changes to ride height or wheel alignment can affect how ADAS sensors perceive the road.

Bumper Cover Removal

Front and rear radar and ultrasonic sensors are often mounted in the bumper cover.

ADAS Warning Lights or Codes

Dashboard warnings related to lane assist, cruise control, or collision avoidance often indicate a calibration issue.

Post-Collision Calibration

If the vehicle has been in a collision and repaired, calibration is almost always required — but it's not as simple as plugging in a scan tool. Before we can calibrate, we need to verify that everything is physically aligned.

Sensors and cameras can only be calibrated accurately if their mounting points, brackets, and surrounding structures are in the correct position. A bumper cover that's off by a few millimeters or a radiator support that wasn't pulled back to spec will result in a calibration that looks successful on the scan tool but sends the system aiming in the wrong direction.

We provide pre-calibration alignment verification as part of our post-collision service. To do this effectively, we need to know upfront what was damaged and what was replaced or repaired. Include this information in your service request so we can plan the job correctly.

We require an indoor space with adequate room for target placement. If your shop doesn't have the space, we may be able to perform the calibration at our facility.
How much space does my shop need?
Space requirements vary by vehicle and calibration type, but most static calibrations require a flat, level area with 15–25 feet of clear space in front of the vehicle and adequate room on each side for target positioning. We'll confirm the exact requirements for your specific vehicle when you submit a service request.
Can you calibrate a vehicle after collision repair?

Sensors, brackets, and mounting points must be physically aligned and properly installed before calibration can be performed. We need to know: the year, make, and model of the vehicle; which ADAS systems need calibration; what damage occurred and what was replaced or repaired (windshield, bumper cover, radiator support, sensors, cameras, etc.); and whether a wheel alignment has been performed. This information helps us determine the correct procedure and whether any pre-checks are needed.

Not all calibrations require a dynamic component — we'll let you know ahead of time if a test drive is part of the procedure for your specific vehicle.
